Maileg IKEA Dolls House Guide

This guide is part of our Maileg Knowledge Base: a collection of helpful guides to Maileg mice, dolls’ houses, furniture and imaginative play.

As part of our collection of Maileg Guides, this guide walks you through the IKEA Flisat dolls house and explains why it works so well with Maileg. We’ve renovated and styled lots of IKEA Flisat houses over the years, so we’ll also share our own practical tips and inspiration along the way.

What is the Ikea Flisat Dolls House/Shelf?

The Ikea Dolls House is a basic wooden shelf shaped like a house. Made from pine and fibre board, It's part of IKEA's Flisat furniture range. The dimensions of the house are: Width: 58 cm Depth: 22 cm Height: 59 cm. It comes flat packed and arrives unpainted, except for a green chimney.

Should you use the IKEA Flisat Dolls House for Maileg?

There are many benefits to using the IKEA dolls houses for your Maileg collection:

  • Simple design - means it can be anything your child imagines it to be.
  • Minimalist style - makes it a great blank canvas for customising.
  • Open design - making it perfect for little hands to reach in and play from different angles.
  • Small footprint - so it fits well in the smallest of rooms.
  • Budget friendly - so it's a great way to dip your toes into dolls houses without a big commitment. Ideal for seeing whether your child actually enjoys this kind of play before investing in something bigger and more costly.
  • It comfortably fits Maileg mouse-sized furniture

Which Maileg Characters Fit in the IKEA Flisat Dollhouse?

The IKEA Flisat dollhouse comfortably fits:

  • All Maileg mice, including

    • Baby mice

    • Big brother and sister mice

    • Little brother and sister mice

    • Mum and dad mice

  • Maileg micro bunnies and micro rabbits

  • MY Rabbits

The IKEA house is not large enough for the Maileg bunnies and rabbits from size 1 onwards.

What Maileg Furniture Fits the IKEA Flisat Dollhouse?

When choosing furniture for an IKEA Flisat Maileg mouse house, choose furniture labelled as 'mouse' size or suitable for 'baby mouse'

This includes:

How many rooms does the IKEA Flisat have?

It is divided into four sections so you can create four different rooms, such as a kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom. If you prefer, you can leave out the dividing wall on the ground floor in order to create an open plan kitchen/living area which we have done in many of our IKEA dolls houses.

Is the IKEA Dolls House easy to build?

The IKEA dolls house is actually really easy to build. The tricky bit is the figuring out what goes where. To make life easier, we suggest laying out all the pieces and matching them up with the steps in the instruction booklet before you begin building. It really helps to label each piece with a letter and then jot those same letters onto the steps in the booklet. Once you've figured that out, it's really easy to construct using the Allen key provided.

Do You Need to Decorate the IKEA Flisat Dollhouse for your Maileg mice?

You don’t need to decorate the IKEA Flisat dollhouse - it works perfectly well as a house straight away. However, many people choose to decorate it because it’s a fun, creative project and a lovely way to personalise the space. We’ve decorated lots of IKEA Flisat houses and usually opt for light, bright colours and hardwearing, child-friendly paints, but there’s no right or wrong approach. You can paint it, use gift wrap or wallpaper on the walls, add flooring, or keep it simple - the IKEA Flisat is a blank canvas, and how you decorate it is entirely up to you.

Decorating Your IKEA Flisat as a Maileg Mouse House

Which paint to use

Soft, light colours work beautifully with Maileg furniture and accessories, helping rooms feel bright and calm rather than busy. If the house will be well played with, choosing durable, child-safe paint is a good idea. We like to use Eggshell paint as it is hard-wearing and gives a nice sheen finish.

Wallpapering your house

In our previous IKEA Flisat builds we've used both Maileg gift wraps as wallpaper (the design 'Merle' is a customer favourite) and Maileg's wallpaper packs designed for the Maileg Farmhouse. We've generally left floors plain and added rugs for a cosy feel.

Room Layout Ideas

You can either configure your IKEA Flisat with four different rooms, such as a kitchen, living room, bedroom and bathroom, or you can leave out the dividing wall on the ground floor to create an open plan kitchen/living area.
